What is Umbrella Insurance?

An umbrella policy provides excess liability protection. In the event that a suit is brought against you, your underlying homeowners, renters, condo, or auto insurance policy will provide liability coverage. However, once the underlying limits are reached, your umbrella policy will kick in. Umbrella policies require that you first have underlying liability coverage. The required limits of the underlying coverage will vary depending on the insurance company. In addition, some insurance companies will require that your homeowners and/or auto policy also be covered by them in order to purchase their umbrella policies.

What is Flood Insurance?

Your standard homeowners or renters insurance policy does not provide coverage for flood damage. To cover your losses sustained in a flood, you will need to purchase a flood insurance policy. Flood coverage is currently provided by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) (provide link here) and some private insurers. Your lender will require you to purchase flood insurance if your property is located in a designated flood zone. However, you may also consider purchasing a flood insurance policy if your property is at risk from other sources of flooding such as an overflowing creek or pond or even melting snow.

What is Earthquake Insurance?

Your standard homeowners or fire insurance policy does not provide coverage for damages caused by earthquakes. Earthquake coverage can be purchased as an endorsement to your existing home or fire policies or as a separate policy. The California Earthquake Authority (CEA) was created to assist in making earthquake coverage available in California. The CEA is a privately financed and publicly managed earthquake insurer that offers their product through 17 participating insurers. Although earthquake insurance is not mandatory, insurers must offer this coverage when writing new business on home, condo, fire, and renters policies.
